WAVERLY, Iowa-- Nick Mitchell '00, current head wrestling coach at Grand View University in Des Moines, has been named the 2012 John Kurtt Alumni Coach of the Year.
Mitchell started the Grand View wrestling program in 2008-09. The Vikings won the 2012 NAIA National championship and he was named the 2012 NWCA and NAIA National Coach of the Year.
"Winning the national title last year was a really rewarding experience," said Mitchell. "It was the fourth year of the program’s history, so it was great for some of those original recruits who came in on the ground floor to leave with a national team title."
The 2010 and 2011 Regional Coach of the Year has coached 22 All-Americans and five NAIA National Champions.
Mitchell has a career dual record of 31-8 commanding Grand View's program.
He was one of eight individuals who has been selected for induction into the Wartburg College Athletic Hall of Fame on October 20, 2012.
Mitchell was a four-year wrestler at Wartburg and competed on the 1999 National Championship team.
He was a three-time All-American and finished as the national runner-up in 1999 and placed third twice in his career.
Mitchell was part of four Iowa Conference championship teams, was a three-time Iowa Conference individual champion, and compiled 114 wins in his career.
He will be presented with this award at a date to be determined.
