Dual season opens Saturday

No. 2-ranked Wartburg sends individuals to the Olivet (Mich.) Comet Duals, Augsburg (Minn.) Auggie-Brute Adidas Open and Concordia University of Mequon, Wis., Falcon Open Saturday, Nov. 20.

Coach Jim Miller’s squad begins its 2010-11 dual slate this weekend. They face Manchester College of Indiana, Trine University of Indiana, Heidelberg College of Ohio and Olivet during the Comet Duals. Fans can check progress on the duals throughout the day at http://www.olivetcollege.edu/athletics/mwrestling/10duals/match_schedule.htm. Dual action is set to begin at 10 a.m. Eastern Standard Time. The two opens the Knights are competing in also begin at 9 a.m. Central Standard Time.

Wartburg notes: Junior 197-pounder Byron Tate of Clinton got his year out to a strong start last weekend at the Iowa State University Haroldn Nichols Cyclone Open. The nation’s top-ranked wrestler at his weight, he rolled up five wins, including a decision over Iowa State’s Jerome Ward who is No. 10 on the preseason Division I lists, to win his weight class. Other top efforts in Ames came from senior heavyweight John Helgerson of West Union (second), senior 125-pounder Mark Kist of Eagle Grove and senior 157-pounder Carrington Banks of Stockbridge, Ga., (fourth), junior 133-pounder Mike Kremer of Independence and junior 149-pounder Charles Tims of Waterloo (fifth). … Tate was named the Iowa Conference’s Male Athlete of the Week for his performance.

HOME OPENER: The Orange and Black put their string of 142 straight dual wins against Iowa Conference competition on the line Tuesday, Nov. 30, when Central College of Pella visits Levick Arena for a 7 p.m. start.
