Athletic Philosophy/Policies

Athletic Philosophy

The intercollegiate athletic program at Wartburg College seeks to integrate the objectives and lessons of athletic participation and competition with the academic and social life of the College. The program should reflect the mission of Wartburg, the philosophy of NCAA Division III, and the American Rivers Conference Athletic Conference (A-R-C).

An effective intercollegiate program should contribute significantly to the development of the participant by supporting sportsmanship and furnishing opportunities for growth, self-realization, and fulfillment of individual and team potential. It should also cultivate an environment that fosters academic success, leadership, discipline, and a sense of ethical conduct. Finally, the college strives to promote the health and welfare of all student athletes and provide equal emphasis to men's and women's sports in terms of facilities, funding, and the quality of the overall experience.

Student-Athlete Code of Conduct

The intercollegiate athletic program at Wartburg College provides an opportunity for student-athletes to compete in an environment that values athletics competition as part of the educational process. The nature of athletics competition and team play including its connection to the media, college community, and public, make student-athletes extremely visible. It is a privilege and not a right to be a student-athlete and every student-athlete is expected to conduct him or herself in a manner that exhibits respect to Wartburg College, the Department of Athletics and their team for the duration of their tenure as a student-athlete.

As a member of the student body of Wartburg College you must act in accordance with the rules and policies set forth by the Student Handbook including using honesty in your academic work. Student-athletes are expected to attend all classes and communicate with professors in advance if there is a conflict related to an athletic contest.  Student-athletes are not allowed to miss class to attend practice. As a student-athlete you are expected to adhere to the rules and regulations of the American Rivers Conference, the NCAA, and the State of Iowa.

Every student-athlete is obligated to report any violations of this Student-Athlete Code of Conduct to their head coach or the Director of Athletics within 24 hours of the violation.

Sportsmanship
Sportsmanship is respect for oneself, teammates, coaches, officials, opponents, and property.  Student-athletes are expected to display the highest level of sportsmanship as a participant in an athletic event and as a spectator at all athletic events.

Team Rules
The head coach is the person most responsible for the conduct of his/her program.  Each coach will establish team rules consistent with the Wartburg College Student-Athlete Code of Conduct.  Team rules will be in writing and distributed to team members at the start of each academic year.  A copy of each sports team rules shall be given to the Director of Athletics and Associate Director of Athletics/Senior Woman Administrator.  All decisions directly related to individual and team performance (i.e. playing time, position, traveling squad, etc.) are the decision of the head coach and are final.

Alcohol Policy
Wartburg College highly discourages alcohol consumption and seeks to promote an environment in which choosing not to drink is preferred and socially acceptable.  We believe that the use of alcohol can be detrimental to the physical and mental well being of student-athletes.  It is unlawful according to the State of Iowa law for any person under the age of 21 to purchase, consume, possess, distribute or sell alcohol.  The Alcohol Policy pertains to all alcohol related incidents filed by student life, college staff or any law enforcement agency during the student-athlete’s years of eligibility.  Student-athletes are prohibited from possessing and/or consuming alcoholic beverages while participating in any Wartburg College Department of Athletics sponsored activities.

Hazing
Hazing is defined by Wartburg College as any action or situation, on or off campus, which creates a negative separation between peers by causing others to perform activities that are humiliating, insulting, demeaning, mentally or physically abusive, or potentially harmful. The Department of Athletics unequivocally opposes hazing.

Gambling
Wartburg and the NCAA oppose all forms of legal and illegal sports wagering. Sports wagering has the potential to undermine the integrity of sports contests and jeopardizes the welfare of student-athletes and the intercollegiate athletics community. Providing information to individuals in gambling activities, placing or accepting a bet on any intercollegiate team is prohibited under NCAA rules and regulations (NCAA bylaw 10.02 & 10.3.

That Means…

  • NO wagers on ANY professional or college event, even those that don’t involve your college
  • NO sports “pools,” even those run by your friends in the dorm
  • NO Internet gambling on sports events
  • NO sports wagering using “800” numbers
  • NO fantasy leagues that award a prize and require a fee to participate
  • NO exchange of information about your team with ANYONE who gambles. In other words, no information about injuries, new plays, team morale, discipline problems, or anything else

You will be declared ineligible to compete in college sports and off the team if you are discovered to have made a bet or given information to someone who does gamble.

Social Networking Policy
The Department of Athletics understands the popularity and usefulness of social networking sites and supports their use by student-athletes provided:

  • No offensive or inappropriate pictures are posted.
  • No offensive or inappropriate comments are posted.
  • Photos and/or comments posted on these sites do not depict team-related or college-identifiable activities (including wearing/using team uniforms or gear inappropriately).

Student-athletes must remember that they are representatives of Wartburg College and are in the public eye more so than other students.  Please keep the following in mind as you participate on social networking websites:

  • Before participating in any online community, understand that anything posted online is available to anyone in the world.  Any text or photo placed online becomes the property of the site(s) and is completely out of your control the moment it is placed online – even if you limit access to your site.
  • You should not post any information, photos or other items online that could embarrass you, your family, your team, the Department of Athletics or Wartburg College.  This includes information that may be posted by others on your page.
  • Never post your address, phone number(s), birth date or other personal information.  You could be a target of predators.
  • Coaches and Department of Athletics administrators can and do monitor these websites regularly.
  • Student-athletes could face discipline and even dismissal for violations of this policy.

These websites are also regularly monitored by potential employers, internship supervisors, graduate programs and scholarship committees as a way of screening applicants.  Student athletes should be very careful when using online social networking and think about not only your image today among your college peers, but who you might want to be in the future.
