INDIANOLA – Second-ranked Wartburg wrapped up an impressive week with five individual champions at the Simpson Storm Invitational Dec. 4.
The Knights, en route to the team title (184 points), had senior 157-pounder Carrington Banks of Stockbridge, Ga., junior 174-pounder Ben Scott of Adel, junior 184-pounder Dylan Azinger of DeWitt, junior 197-pounder Byron Tate of Clinton and senior heavyweight John Helgerson of West Union claim the weight class titles. Tate, ranked No.1, was named the tournament’s Outstanding Wrestler after moving into the championship round with three falls and then defeating second-ranked Ryan Malo of Williams 6-4 in a rematch of last year’s national finals.
Freshman 165-pounder Landon Williams of Davenport took runner-up honors, while senior 125-pounder Mark Kist of Eagle Grove, sophomore 141-pounder Tommy Mirocha of Davenport and junior 133-pounder Mike Kremer of Independence each placed third.
The Knights return to the mats at their home Dick Walker Invitational Saturday, Dec. 11. Wartburg’s next dual competition is Monday, Dec. 20, at its Desert Duals event at the Flamingo Las Vegas Hotel.
