Cornell Matman final brackets/final team standings

DECORAH – Sparked by nine bonus-point wins, No. 1-ranked Wartburg College upended Luther 45-3 in Iowa Conference dual action Jan. 14.

The Knights, moving to 15-1 overall and 3-0 in the league, jumped out quickly behind senior 125-pounder Mark Kist (Eagle Grove) and sophomore 133-pounder Thomas Mirocha (Davenport) Kist won by fall in under a minute, and Mirocha produced a major decision for a 10-0 lead. Coach Jim Miller’s team never looked back, adding three consecutive technical falls from senior 149-pounder Jacob Groth (Marshalltown), senior 157-pounder Carrington Banks (Stockbridge, Ga.), and freshman 165-pounder Landon Williams (Davenport) to build the margin to 25-3.

Wartburg resumes its busy weekend schedule sending a large contingent to the Cornell Matman Invitational at the Small Multi-Sport Center on Cornell’s campus in Mount Vernon Saturday, Jan. 15. NOTES: Groth’s technical fall moved him into 100-career win club. He’s the second Knights wrestler this season to reach the level, joining senior heavyweight John Helgerson (West Union). … Junior Byron Tate (Clinton) won his 37th match in his last 38 attempts with a fall over Nick Pearch. … Wartburg’s win increased its remarkable streak against Iowa Conference dual opposition to 145 in a row.

Cornell Matman Invitational

Wartburg claimed four individual weight class championships en route to the team title at the 2011 Cornell College Matman Invitational Jan. 15.

The Knights' champions were juniorAlex Helmich (Graettinger)(125), Mirocha, freshman Cole Welter (Gilbertville) (149), and freshman Sam Upah (Marshalltown) (184). Miller's squad finished the day with 168.5 points, 77.5 points in front of runner-up Augsburg College of Minneapolis, Minn.

The Orange and Black resumes IIAC dual action Wednesday, Jan. 19, when Buena Vista visits Levick for a 7 p.m. start.
