WAVERLY- A second half comeback by Wartburg College fell just short Jan. 22 in a 74-69 loss to Coe.

The Knights fell to 15-3 overall and 6-3 in Iowa Conference play. The Kohawks (15-2, 8-1) bolted out to an 18-9 lead early and built the margin to as much as 14 in the second half. However, Coach Bob Amsberry’s team chipped away and trailed only 67-64 after junior forwardEmily Timmermans (Vinton) converted a three-point play with 1:04 left.  Coe worked the shot clock down to five seconds on its next possession and hit a long three-pointer from the top of the key to re-extend the lead to six.

Timmermans guided the Orange and Black on the scoring chart and on the boards. She finished the afternoon with a double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds to go with one steal.  Senior guardSamantha Harrington (Nashua) was next on the board with 12 points, four rebounds, five assists and two steals. Katie Zittergruen, a senior center from Van Horne, also wound up in double figures with 10 points.

The Knights will be back in action on Wednesday, Jan. 26, at Levick Arena against Central College with tipoff at 6 p.m.

NOTES: Harrington only needs two more points to reach Wartburg’s top 10 in career scoring. She is also two three-pointers away from having 200 for her career. … Timmermans’ 10 boards marked the third time this season and fourth time in her career that she reached double digits on the glass.
