WAVERLY – Wartburg College scored 18 of the game’s first 24 points en route to a 78-61 win over the University of Dubuque Jan. 8.
The Knights, improving to 13-0 overall and 4-0 in Iowa Conference play, held the visiting Spartans to 37.1 percent shooting from the field and only a 21.1 percent clip from outside the arc (four of 19). Coach Bob Amsberry’s team was just as strong offensively, hitting 51.9 percent from the field and better than 73 percent at the charity stripe.
Wartburg held a 38-24 halftime advantage and built the lead to as much as 26 points in the second stanza. Senior guard Samantha Harrington (Nashua), earning double figures for the 11th consecutive game, scored a single-season-high 20 points. Senior center Katie Zittergruen (Van Horne) produced 12 points and seven rebounds, while sophomore guard Abi Weidemann (Iowa Falls) came off the bench for 11 points and five assists.
The Knights conclude a four-game home stand Wednesday, Jan. 12, when Loras College of Dubuque visits Levick Arena for a 6 p.m. tip-off.
NOTES – Harrington’s 20-point outing was her first such since last January during an 83-71 win at Buena Vista where she scored 25 points. … Junior forward Terri Dirks (Monticello) continued her recent solid play. Her nine points moved her points-per-game average to 5.7 and continued a rise of eight-tenths of a point over the last three games, while her six boards increased her rebounds-per-game average to 2.7, up six-tenths over the same span.
