Strong Second Half Propels Wartburg Past UW-Stout

SHEBOYGAN, Wis.—The Wartburg College women’s basketball team (1-0 overall) outscored UW-Stout 39-31 in the second half to start its season undefeated with its 59-54 win Friday night.
 
This scoring streak included five-of-six free throws in the last seven minutes of the game.
 
Junior Abi Weidemann (Iowa Falls) led all scorers with her 17 points, just one point shy of her career-high and senior Stephanie Reiter (Buckingham) joined her in double-figures with 16 on the night.  Weidemann finished 11-13 at the charity stripe.
 
UW-Stout was ahead 23-20 at the break but the Knights started the second half on a 7-2 run to knot the score at 27 all three minutes into the frame.
 
The game would be tied again twice until the Orange and Black took the lead at 42-40 with 7:48 to play which they never relinquished.
 
The Blue Devils came within one point with seven seconds remaining, but Wartburg made five of six free throw attempts to seal the victory in its season opener.
 
With the win, the Knights will face Beloit College in the Championship Game Saturday at 4 p.m.
