Knights Lose Heartbreaker to Beavers

STORM LAKE, Iowa—The Wartburg women’s basketball team (6-2 overall, 2-1 IIAC) lost a heartbreaker to Iowa Conference opponent, Buena Vista (6-3, 2-0) 72-68 Wednesday night.
 
The Beavers were ahead 36-28 at halftime and were ahead by 12 points with 9:34 to play.
 
The Orange and Black whittled the margin to one point with 3:32 to go and within two with 2:05 remaining.
 
After Buena Vista’s Amanda Roder made a jumper with 42 seconds on the clock and junior Terri Dirks (Monticello) made both of her free throw attempts to bring the margin to two with 27 secconds left.
 
Wartburg fouled Brooke Wehle to get the ball back and Wehle made both of her free throws to make the score 72-68 with 18 seconds remaining.
 
The Knights fouled again after missing a jumper with two seconds to go but BV’s shooter missed her free throw attempt but the Orange and Black were unable to run a successful play as time expired.
 
Seniors Leslie Wilson (Austin, Minn.) and Stephanie Reiter (Buckingham) led the Knights in double-digits with 17 and 13 points, respectively.
 
Reiter also had a team-best five rebounds on the game.

Wartburg's bench outscored BV's 17-8 and tallied 29 points on BV's turnovers.
 
The Beavers had five players in double figures and were paced by 14 from Jessica Christensen.
 
Wartburg returns to the court next Friday when it travels to face Martin Luther at 5 p.m.
