DUBUQUE – A late run by Loras sent Wartburg College to a 73-61 Iowa Conference loss Feb. 19.
The host Duhawks (14-11 overall, 10-6 IIAC) overturned a 57-54 deficit with just over four and a half minutes to play due to a 19-4 roll that ended the contest. Wartburg (21-4, 12-4 IIAC) had done the same thing in the latter stages of the first half with a 20-6 stretch that started with 7:36 remaining which gave them a 34-31 halftime edge.
Coach Bob Amsberry’s team had a balanced offensive attack with senior guard Samantha Harrington (Nashua)scoring 14 points, dishing out three assists and grabbing three steals, while junior guard Stephanie Reiter (LaPorte City)and senior center Katie Zittergruen (Van Horne) turned in 10 points each. Zittergruen was also the rebounding leader with five.
The Orange and Black begin 2011 Iowa Conference postseason tournament play Tuesday, Feb. 22, when the University of Dubuque visits Levick Arena for a 7 p.m. tipoff in one of two quarterfinals. The winner advances to face Simpson Thursday, Feb. 24, in semifinal round action.
NOTES: Harrington finished the regular season with an eight-game double-figure scoring string. Her points per game average is up nine-tenths, to 12.1, in the span. … Wartburg hosts its third consecutive IIAC quarterfinal round contest Tuesday night. They split meetings against Loras in the first two games.
