WAVERLY – A quick first half start helped propel Wartburg College to a key 83-73 Iowa Conference win over Buena Vista Feb. 5.
The Knights (19-3, 10-3 IIAC) scored 19 of the game’s first 28 points and never trailed. Buena Vista (10-10 overall, 6-5 IIAC) pulled to within one three times in the second half before a late 13-2 run sealed the win.
Coach Bob Amsberry’s offense was balanced. Senior guard Samantha Harrington (Nashua) led the way with 21 points, including a perfect eight-for-eight effort from the line, and three assists and three steals. Junior forward Terri Dirks (Monticello) added 12 points, eight rebounds and two steals, while freshman forward Rachel Leitz (Brooklyn Park, Minn.), came off the bench for 11 points and two steals. Junior forward Emily Timmermans (Vinton) narrowly missed a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds to go along with four steals.
Wartburg closes its home regular season slate with a 2 p.m. tip-off against Simpson Saturday, Feb. 12.
NOTES: Harrington’s current double-figure scoring streak rose to five successive games. She’s hit multiple three-pointers in four straight contests. … Dirks posted her third double-figure game of the season. …. Timmermans has been at-or-above six rebounds in seven of her last eight appearances.
