MOUNT VERNON, Iowa-- The Wartburg men's tennis team (3-2 overall, 0-2 IIAC) fell 8-1 to Iowa Conference opponents, Cornell (3-3, 1-0) and Luther (5-1, 1-0) Saturday.
In the match against Cornell, senior Chris Buckingham (Waverly) recorded the Knights' lone point with his 6-2 and 6-4 win at No. 1 singles.
Brian Rasmussen fell 6-2, 6-3 and Eric Hilpert fell 6-1 and 6-3.
Blayne Willadsen fell 6-2, 3-6, 10-4 at No. 4 and Dayton Stevens fell 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5.
Josh Trueblood rounded out the singles competitors and dropped 6-2, 6-3 at the No. 6 spot.
In doubles play, Buckingham/Trueblood were defeated 9-7 at the top position, Rasmussen/Hilpert fell 8-2 and Willadsen/Stevens fell 8-5.
Against Luther, Buckingham/Trueblood recorded Wartburg's lone point with their 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles.
Rasmussen/Hilpert fell 8-3 at No. 2 and Willadsen/Stevens fell 8-5 at No. 3 doubles.
In singles play, Buckingham fell 6-0 and 6-0 at the No. 1 spot.
Rasmussen fell 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2, Hilpert was defeated 6-3, 6-3 and Willadsen fell 6-7, 6-0 and 7-5.
Stevens was defeated 6-2, 6-0 and Trueblood fell 6-1 and 6-1 at No. 6.
The Orange and Black return to the court next Saturday against Coe and Carthage College in Cedar Rapids.
