Knights Start Spring Season 2-0

WAVERLY, Iowa-- The Wartburg men's tennis team (2-0 overall, 1-0 IIAC) started its spring season with a pair of 9-0 shutout wins Sunday.

The Knights defeated non-conference opponent, Edgewood College, in the morning and followed that win with the victory over Iowa Conference opponent, Central, in the afternoon.

Against Edgewood, Chris Buckingham and Brian Rasmussen each won 6-1 and 6-0 at No. 1 and 2 singles, respectively.

Eric Hilpert and Blayne Willadson both shutout their opponents, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 and 4 spots.

Dayton Stevens and Josh Trueblood each won their matches 6-2 and 6-0.

In doubles play, Buckingham and Trueblook won 8-1 at the top spot. Rasmussen and Hilpert won 8-0 at No. 2 as did Stevens and Willadsen at the No. 3 position.

Against Central, Buckingham won at No. 1 singles, 6-4 and 7-5.  Rasmussen won at the No. 2 spot, 6-1 and 6-3 while  Hilpert won at No. 3 singles, 7-6 and 6-4.

Willadsen was victorious at No. 4 (6-1, 6-0), Stevens at No. 5 (6-3, 6-4) and Trueblood won at No. 6 (6-2, 6-3).

In doubles play, Buckingham and Trueblood combined for the 8-2 win at No. 1, Rasmussen and Hilpert won 8-6 at No. 2 and Stevens/Willadsen combined for the 8-1 win at No. 3.

The Orange and Black return to the court Sunday when they travel to face Ripon College at 1 p.m.
