WAVERLY, Iowa-- The Wartburg men's tennis team (10-6 overall) split its matches Saturday against non-conference opponents, Grand View and UW-LaCrosse.
The Knights defeated Grand View in shutout fashion, 9-0.
In singles play, Brian Rassmussen won at the top spot (6-1, 6-2) and Eric Hilpert won at the No. 2 position, 6-1, 6-0.
Dayton Stevens was victorious at No. 3 (6-2, 6-1) and Josh Trueblood won at No. 4, 6-1, 6-0.
Walker Wilson rounded out the singles competitors with his 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 5.
The No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles matches were forfeited by Grand View.
In doubles play, Chris Buckingham and Trueblood combined for the 8-1 win at the top spot and Rasmussen/Stevens won 8-0 at the No. 2 position.
Against UW-LaCrosse, the Orange and Black lost 6-3.
Hilpert and Willadsen earned all of Wartburg's match points as they combined for the 8-4 win at No. 3 doubles and each won their respective single matches. Hilpert with his No. 3 singles win (7-5, 6-1) and Willadsen with his No. 4 singles win (7-6, 7-6).
In the other matches, Buckingham fell 6-1, 6-2 in his No. 1 single match and Rasmussen was defeated 6-3, 6-3 at no. 2.
Stevens fell 6-4, 7-5 at No. 5 and Trueblood lost 6-3, 7-6 at No. 6.
In doubles competition, Buckingham/Trueblood lost 8-3 at No. 1 and Rasmussen/Stevens were defeated 8-4 at No. 2.
Wartburg returns to competition next Saturday when it hosts Buena Vista at 9 a.m. and Ashford at noon.
