Wartburg trounces Fontbonne, 66-46, with hot first half

CLAYTON, Mo. — The Wartburg College women raced to a 19-point halftime lead Monday night as they defeated host Fontbonne University, 66-46.
 
The Knights (2-1) shot 56 percent (14-25) in the opening stanza, including four of eight on three-pointers, while holding the Griffins to 27.6 percent (8-29), while taking a 36-17 advantage.
 
Fontbonne scored the opening basket for its only lead of the game, falling behind by as much as 25 at 61-36 with 4:28 remaining.
 
Wartburg dominated points in the paint, 30-12. Its shooting, though, cooled off considerably in the second at 35.7 percent (1-8 from behind the arc). For the game, the Knights shot 45.3 percent (24-53), while the hosts were only 32.8 percent (19-58).
 
Both teams were turnover prone. The Knights committed 31, but had 14 steals. Fontbonne gave the ball away 24 times.
 
Three guards led the Knights in scoring. Carly Jacobs, a senior from Allison, had 14 points; Holly Hallstead, a junior from Hudson, had 13, while Bobbi Burrows, a sophomore from Bondurant, chipped in 10.
 
Alyssa Sager, a junior forward from Albert Lea, Minn., led the Knights on the boards with 12, including six each on the offensive and defensive glass.
 
The Knights conclude their two-day Missouri swing Tuesday, Nov. 26, against Westminster College (1-2) in Fulton.
