Knights come home, edge UW-Claire, 60-58, for fourth straight

Alyssa Sager led Wartburg in scoring and rebounding against the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.
WAVERLY, Iowa — The Wartburg College women won a nailbiter, 60-58, over the University of Eau Claire in the Knights' home debut Saturday afternoon in Levick Arena.

Alyssa Sager, a junior forward from Albert Lea, Minn., led Wartburg with 15 points and seven rebounds as the Knights (4-1) won their fourth straight and avenged a 47-45 loss to the Blugolds last year.

UW Eau Claire (1-5), which had a chance to take the lead when Kristen Sahr missed a three-pointer with 19 seconds left, lost its third consecutive game.

For the second game in a row, the Knights protected the three-point line. The Blugolds were only 3-for-24 from beyond the arc and 38 percent overall. The Knights held Westminster to 3-for-20 from long range in a 74-61 win Tuesday.

Wartburg, which trailed 33-31 at halftime, also received double-digit performances from leading scorer Carly Jacobs, a senior guard from Allison, with 12, and Holly Hallstead, a junior guard from Hudson, with 11. The Knights shot a chilly 36.8 percent (21-57), but were 6-for-14 from three with Jacobs hitting three of four.

UW-Eau Claire outrebounded Wartburg, 44-33, but also led in fouls, 19-12.

The Knights go back on the road for a Friday evening (5:30 p.m.) game against Martin Luther College in New Ulm, Minn., but return Sunday to Levick for a 6 p.m. contest against the University of Minnesota-Morris.
