Men's Tennis to Compete in Conference Championships this Weekend

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa --- Six Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) men's tennis teams take the first step toward qualifying for the 2014 NCAA Division III Championships at the IIAC Men's Tennis AQ Tournament May 2-3.

The six-team tournament is being hosted by Coe College by virtue of winning the Iowa Conference title this spring.

Play begins with a pair of first-round matches at the Veterans Memorial Tennis Center on Friday, May 2. No. 3 Luther will face No. 6 Simpson in one first-round match, while No. 4 Central plays No. 5 Buena Vista in the other.

On Saturday, all six qualified schools will be in action with top-seeded Coe taking on the Central/Buena Vista winner at 9 a.m. at Clark Racquet Center on Coe's campus. No. 2-seed Wartburg will face the Luther/Simpson winner in the other semifinal at the same time at the Veterans Complex. Friday's losers will play for fifth place, also at 9 a.m. on the Veterans Courts.

Final round matches begin at roughly 1:30 p.m. with the championship at the Clark Racquet Center and the third-place match on the Veterans Courts.

The tournament champion receives the Iowa Conference's automatic berth into the 2014 NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Championships, which begin May 8 or 9.

Match 4 - Luther/Simpson winner vs. No. 2 Wartburg, 9 a.m., at Veterans Memorial Tennis Center
Fifth-Place Match: Match 1 loser vs. Match 2 loser, 9 a.m., at Veterans Memorial Tennis Center
Third-Place Match: Match 3 loser vs. Match 4 loser, 1:30 p.m., at Veterans Memorial Tennis Center
Championship Match: Match 3 winner vs. Match 4 winner, 1:30 p.m., at Clark Racquet Center

Note: Third-palce match may begin earlier than 1:30 p.m. upon mutual agreement of the involved schools.
