Last-Second Shot Falls Just Short in 71-70 Loss to Loras

WAVERLY, Iowa-- Wartburg compiled a strong second-half effort as it outscored Loras, 44-41, in the frame and with three seconds left, got the ball back and brought it up the court. The Knights attempted a last-second shot that bounced off the rim as the buzzer sounded.

The Duhawks won 71-70 and moved to 13-8 on the season and 7-3 in IIAC games, while the Orange and Black are now 13-8, 4-6.



Three players finished in double digits for Wartburg and was led by 18 from freshman Katie Sommer (Cedar Rapids). Classmate Morgan Neuendorf (Shell Rock) and Miranda Murphy (Alleman) joined her with 14 and 11 points, respectively. Sommer went 8-9 from the free throw line.

The Knights led 2-0 in the first few minutes of the game and then fought back to regain the lead at 67-66 with 1:20 to play in the game. The lead changed hands three times over the next minute and was tied at 70 all with 18 ticks left. The Duhawks made a free throw with eight seconds to play and missed their second attempt to give the ball back to the Orange and Black before they ran their final play.

Wartburg takes to the road Wednesday as it travels to face Buena Vista at 6 p.m.
