No. 4/11 Wartburg Advances to Holiday Tournament Championship Game

WAVERLY, Iowa-- The No. 4/11 Wartburg women's basketball team advanced to its own Holiday Tournament Championship Game in its 83-65 win over UW-Superior Friday. The Knights remain undefeated on the season at 10-0 and halted the Yellowjackets' six-game winning streak.

The Orange and Black will face No. 11/17 UW-Whitewater Saturday at 3 p.m.. Both teams are undefeated as the Warhawks are also 10-0.



UW-Superior led 22-19 after the first quarter. Wartburg responded with a 11-4 run over the first three minutes of the second frame to take the lead for good at 30-26.

The Yellowjackets would whittle the margin to six with 8:37 to play in the fourth. The Knights quickly responded with a 10-0 run over the next three minutes to build their lead to 26.

Senior Kristie Sommer (Cedar Rapids) led the team with 18 points as she had six treys, just two shy of her own single game school record.

Twin sister Katie was the next leading scorer with 15 points, senior Miranda Murphy (Alleman) had 14 and classmate Morgan Neuendorf (Plainfield) completed the leading scorers group with 12 points.

Katie and senior Aryn Jones (Marion) co-led the team with seven rebounds and Katie added as many assists.

The Orange and Black held the team advantages in field goal and three-point field goal percentages, rebounds, blocks, and assists.

This marks the third time the program has started the season 10-0 under head coach Bob Amsberry, and second-straight season.
