No. 9/9 Wartburg Wins Iowa Conference Tournament Championship

WAVERLY, Iowa-- The No. 9/9 Wartburg women's basketball team (25-2 overall) won the Iowa Conference Tournament Championship in its 81-68 victory over Luther (17-8) Saturday. The Knights received the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament and will learn their opponent and game location during the NCAA Selection show Monday afternoon.



This was the third conference tournament championship in program history for the Orange and Black and first since 2002. This marked the second meeting with the Norse in the championship and first win over them in the title game for Wartburg.

Junior Katie Sommer (Cedar Rapids) led all scorers with 27 points, which tied her career mark. All five starters finished in double digits as classmates Aryn Jones (Marion), Miranda Murphy (Alleman), Morgan Neuendorf (Shell Rock) and Kristie Sommer (Cedar Rapids) tallied 15, 11, 10 and 10, respectively.

Katie Sommer, Neuendorf and Murphy all led the team with six rebounds each.

The score was back and forth for most of the first half until Wartburg compiled a 6-0 run over the last 1:48 of the second half to take the lead for good as it led 37-31 at halftime.

The Knights led by as many as 14 twice in the second half.

The Orange and Black also broke the season record for team three-point field goals with seven on the day to bring the total to 230. The previous mark was 227 which the program set last season.

Wartburg held the team advantages in field goal percentage (.438 vs. .349) and three-point percentage (.333 vs. .208). The Knights held the Norse to zero defensively behind the arc in the second quarter alone (0-4).
