WAVERLY, Iowa-- The No. 11/13 Wartburg women's basketball team not only clinched the Iowa Conference regular season Championship, but also surpassed the 20-win season mark with its 21st victory of the year. The Knights eclipsed the 20-win mark for the second-straight and third time in the last six seasons. This was also the first regular-season crown for the Orange and Black since 2002-03.
Wartburg defeated Luther 77-54 Wednesday. Junior Kristie Sommer (Cedar Rapids) led all scorers with 18 points, which included five treys. Twin sister Katie and classmate Aryn Jones (Marion) each had 12 points while freshman Emma Gerdes (Cedar Falls) completed the scoring leaders with 10. She added a career-best 13 rebounds for a double-double. Katie now needs one more assist to tie her single season school record which she set last season, and two more to set a new mark.
The game was tied for the only time at 8-8 just three and a half minutes into the first quarter. The Knights began to build their lead and led by as many as 20 in the second quarter alone to take the 42-24 lead into halftime. The Orange and Black continued to maintain their double-digit margin in the entire second half.
Wartburg held the advantages in field goal percentage (.459 vs. .317) and held the Norse to .179 from beyond the arc.
The Knights are off from competition this weekend and return to the court next Wednesday at Dubuque at 6 p.m.
