WAVERLY, Iowa-- The No. 23/24 Wartburg women's basketball team (10-2 overall) upset No. 3/3 St. Thomas (10-1) 60-40 in the Championship game of its own Holiday Tournament. This marked the highest ranked opponent the Knights have defeated in program history. St. Thomas' point total marked its lowest scoring effort over the past 10 years.
The previous highest ranked team the Orange and Black defeated was No. 5/6 Texas Tyler (80-74) on March 12, 2016.

Senior Adrienne Boettger (Cedar Falls) was named to the All-Tournament team with junior Emma Gerdes (Cedar Falls) being named the MVP.
Gerdes tallied a career-high 27 points, which included 10 from the free throw line. She finished with a team-best eight rebounds on the day.
Junior Amanda Brainerd (DeWitt) had eight points, while sophomore Tori Hazard (Janesville) and Boettger each had six.
Wartburg led 18-15 at the end of the first quarter. The Knights continued to maintain their lead throughout the second quarter, and took the 25-19 advantage into the locker room.
A 21-8 third quarter scoring effort by the home team helped the Orange and Black push the margin to double figures. They led by 19 (46-27) at the end of the stanza and continued to lead by double digits in the fourth quarter.
Wartburg held all three team shooting percentages and the rebound battle (32-28), assists (13-6), blocks (2-0) and steals (10-8). Defensively, the Knights held the Tommies to 21.7% from beyond the arc.
The Orange and Black return to competition Saturday, Jan. 5 at Central for a 2 p.m. game.
