PELLA, Iowa-- The No. 2/2 Wartburg women's basketball team (25-0 overall, 16-0 IIAC) set a number of records in its 73-52 win over Central (7-18, 2-14) Saturday.
With the victory, the team recorded the first undefeated regular season in program history. In addition, the Orange and Black became just the third team in IIAC women's basketball history to finished undefeated in conference play: Simpson previously accomplished this in 1998-99 (20-0) and Wartburg was the first to do this in 1990-91 (16-0).
Three players finished in double digits as senior Katie Sommer (Cedar Rapids) led all scorers with 16 points. Classmates Miranda Murphy (Alleman) followed at 14 and Morgan Neuendorf (Plainfield) at 13. Murphy and Neuendorf co-led the team with six rebounds.
The Knights took the 12-8 lead after the first quarter which it never relinquished.
The Orange and Black owned the advantages in all three team shooting percentage categories, in addition to rebounds (48-34), assists (15-13), and steals (9-7).
Wartburg has clinched the top seed in the Iowa Conference tournament and will have a first round bye. The Knights will face the winner of Loras and Buena Vista Thursday, Feb. 22.
