No. 2/2 Wartburg Advances to Second Round of NCAA Tournament

WAVERLY, Iowa-- The No. 2/2 Wartburg women's basketball team (28-0 overall) advanced to the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament with its 86-45 win over Webster (20-7) Friday. The Knights will play No. 12/13 George Fox (25-3) Saturday at 7 p.m.

Five players finished in double digits as senior Morgan Neuendorf (Plainfield) led all scorers with 19. Senior Miranda Murphy (Alleman) had 14, twin sisters Katie and Kristie Sommer (Cedar Rapids) each had 12, and sophomore Emma Gerdes (Cedar Falls) tallied 11.

The Sommers also tied the program's record of games played at 114, set by Jessica Mennen in 2000-04.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS


Kristie set the single-game school record in the NCAA Tournament with her four three-point field goals. The Orange and Black tied the record with 10 treys as a team.

Wartburg jumped to a 13-4 lead with 3:22 left in the first quarter and never looked back. The Knights took the 24-8 lead after the first quarter and continued to lead by double figures for the rest of the game.

The Orange and Black owned the team advantages in field goal percentage (.500 vs. .291), three-point field goal percentage (.435 vs. .182), rebounds (44-26), assists (17-7), and blocks (5-1).
