Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

No. 9 Women's Hoops defeat Simpson, 102-62

WAVERLY, Iowa - The No. 9-ranked Wartburg women's basketball team defeated American Rivers Conference rival Simpson Storm 102-62, breaking 100 points for the fifth time this season.

The Storm started off the first quarter leading the Knights, until the final three minutes.

A three by junior Kaitlyn Volesky brought the Orange and Black within one point at the 3:52 minute mark.

Junior Tori Hazard connected a three with 3:06 remaining to give Wartburg a 15-14 lead. 

The Knights continued to break away from the Storm, starting the second quarter off with a 14 point ahead.

With two minutes remaining in the half, Simpson made a pair of free throws to bring Storm within six points of the Knights. Junior Ally Conrad hit a three with 1:44 remaining to put the Orange and Black up by nine.

Simpson connected two free throws in the final 15 seconds to put the score 42-35 heading into the locker room.

Wartburg continued to extend its lead, up 46 points with 7:19 remaining in the fourth. With five minutes remaining in the game, Volesky connected a layup to put the Orange and Black at 99 points. A minute later, another layup by Volesky broke the 100 point mark.

The Storm hit a three with 20 seconds to end the game with a score of 102-62.

Senior Emma Gerdes and Hazard led the Knights with 19 points each, followed by senior Amanda Brainerd who notched 18. Eight other Knights scored with 34 points coming from the bench. 

Wartburg was 36-of-64 in field goal shooting and shot 72.2% at the free throw line making 13-of-18 shots. The Knights also were 17-41 at the arc, earning season highs in both three point attempts and three points made. 

The team tallied a total 33 rebounds, 25 assists, 13 steals and two blocks. 

The Orange and Black, now 20-3 overall and 12-2 in conference, are on the road to continue conference play against Loras College on Wednesday, Feb. 19. Tipoff is at 5:30 p.m.
