Wrestling Heads to Indianola for Simpson Triangular

WAVERLY, Iowa - The No. 1/2-ranked Wartburg wrestling team will continue its American Rivers Conference schedule this Saturday, Jan. 30 at the Simpson College Triangular in Indianola, Iowa.

Wartburg will compete against No. 14 Coe College at 4 p.m. and then match up versus Simpson College at 5:30 p.m.

ATTENDANCE POLICY
The general public, faculty, staff and students will not be allowed to attend home contests inside Cowles Fieldhouse. Student-athletes and coaches from both teams will be permitted two spectators that can attend. Spectators will use the southwest doors that enter into the arena near the D Street entrance and will be allowed to take their seats one hour prior to the start time in the west bleachers across from the team benches. Spectators will be required to wear a mask and maintain six feet from others outside of their household. Learn more HERE.

LAST TIME OUT
Wartburg is coming off a 37-6 victory at the University of Dubuque last Saturday, Jan. 23. All but one from the Knights' lineup earned victories, including a pair of technical falls from Brady Fritz and Kyle Briggs, a pin from Cael Krueger during his first varsity appearance in Orange & Black, and a 16-4 major decision from Zane Mulder.

The Knights' dual match against Luther College originally scheduled for Jan. 23 was postponed due to health and safety concerns. The match was rescheduled to Tuesday, Feb. 2 at 7 p.m. in Decorah, Iowa.

MULDER COLLECTS A-R-C HONORS
The American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) announced its athletes of the week for the week ending Sunday, Jan. 24, with Zane Mulder (So., Grimes, Iowa) named the Male Athlete and Wrestler of the Week.

Mulder helped guide the Knights to a win over Dubuque during the A-R-C opener, improving Wartburg's record to 1-1 overall. He moved to 2-0 on the season with a 16-4 major decision victory over the Spartans' Zarik Anderson, the 7th-ranked wrestler in the nation at 165 lbs. according to NWCA.

THE SERIES
Saturday's meetings mark the 55th all-time matchup between the Knights and Kohawks, and the 54th between Wartburg and Simpson. 

Coe is searching for its first victory over the Knights since 1989. Last season, Wartburg notched a 24-12 road win over the Kohawks in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Wartburg is riding a win-streak over the Storm dating back to 1991, and earned a 47-3 win last year during the 2019-20 home opener at Levick Arena.

KNIGHTS SELECTED FIRST IN PRESEASON POLL
Wartburg was voted to finish first in the American Rivers Conference Preseason Coaches' Poll, released Jan. 13. The Knights received 63 points and seven first place votes, which was seven points higher than second place Loras College who collected 56 points and one first place vote. 

SIX KNIGHTS RANKED BY NWCA
The National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) released its first edition of the 2021 NCAA Division III Coaches Rankings Thursday, Jan. 21, with Wartburg tied for second of 16 teams with 39 points. 

Additionally, six Knights were ranked individually among the top 10 in their respective weight classes, which leads the nation.

WARTBURG PICKED FIRST IN FLOWRESTLING RANKINGS
Wartburg was ranked first in the second release of the 2020-21 Division III FloWrestling team rankings, totaling 61 points to sit atop the top-25 poll, released Jan. 29, 2021.
