No. 10 Women's Basketball Has Big Second Quarter; Defeats UW-Platteville 78-55

WAVERLY, IA— Holding the Pioneers of UW-Platteville to 12 second quarter points, the No. 10 Wartburg Knights women's basketball squad defeated the Pioneers 78-55 inside Levick Arena on Nov. 20.

The Knights saw four players land in double-figures, including Jaedon Murphy recording her first double-double of the season.

How It Happened

Macy Harris opened the Knights scoring efforts with a pair of layups as the Knights took an early 4-2 lead in the game. The Knights and Pioneers battled, tying the game at ten with 4:22 remaining in the game, the final time the game would be tied. Murphy, coming off a career-high game against UW-Stout, recorded her second and third baskets of the night. Brea Dillavou scored a layup off an offensive rebound by the Knights, extending the lead to seven with just under two minutes to play.

With Britney Young making a basket late in the first quarter, Hannah Anderson capitalized on a steal and gave the Knights an 11-point advantage early in the second quarter. Young hit a late three-pointer in the second quarter on an assist from Sara Faber. Young would turn around an assisted Murphy with a three-pointer as the Knights took a 16-point lead. Young and Faber connected for a second three-pointer as the Knights would take a 19-point lead at the break on a layup by Murphy.

A strong Pioneer defense held the Knights to only a single free throw in the opening four minutes of the second half. Faber caught a pass from Dillavou for a shot beyond the arc as the Knights regained a 17-point advantage. The Knights added seven points over the next minute, taking a 20-point lead with 4:10 remaining in the third. Murphy would be fouled late in the third, making the pair of free throws as the Knights took a 21-point lead heading into the fourth and final quarter.

It was a baskets battle in the fourth quarter as the Pioneers could not overcome the Knights lead. The Knights had their best shooting percentage in the fourth quarter (41%), while making three three-pointers. Faber rebounded a missed shot by the Knights, passing the ball to Anderson for a three-pointer with 3:07 remaining to play. Taylor Runchey connected with Dillavou for the final three-pointer of the game, sealing the Knights 22-point victory.

Checking out the Numbers

Recording her first double-double of the season, Murphy went 6-of-13 from the field (5-of-6 free throws) and grabbed ten boards in the contest. Joining Murphy in double figures were Young, Anderson, and Dillavou as the trio recorded 11 points respectively. The Knights shot 41% from the field and 69% from the line, missing only five free throws in the contest.

The Knights recorded 27 defensive rebounds, holding the Pioneers to a shooting percentage of 34% from the field.

Next Time Out

The Knights are set to open American Rivers Conference action on Tuesday, Nov. 23 as they travel to the University of Dubuque. Tip-off is slated for 5:30 p.m.
