No. 5 Women's Hoops Rolls to Victory Behind Trio of Freshmen

WAVERLY, Iowa - The fifth ranked Wartburg women's basketball team took home a 73-53 victory over Edgewood College on Friday, Feb. 12 to remain perfect inside Levick Arena. The Knights now hold a 5-0 all-time record against the Eagles including two consecutive wins this season.

The Orange & Black (10-1, 3-1 A-R-C) will return to American Rivers Conference action on Wednesday, Feb. 17 when they travel to Dubuque, Iowa to take on the University of Dubuque (4-4, 3-1 A-R-C) at 5:30 p.m.

The Knights broke out to a 20-9 lead after the first period behind some hot shooting from long range as Wartburg finished the frame 40% from beyond the arc. Freshman guard Sara Faber tallied seven points in the frame and shot a perfect 3-of-3 from the floor. Edgewood struggled to get out of the gate as they shot only 27.3% during the period and had five turnovers.

The Eagles battled back in the second period as they outscored Wartburg 23-14. Edgewood went on a 12-0 run midway through the second and took a one-point lead. However, the Knights were able to stop the bleeding and regained control of the contest when freshman forward Jaedon Murphy knocked in a three and blocked two consecutive shots. Edgewood's Bria Lemirande drained a half-court heave at the buzzer to cut the Wartburg lead to just two at halftime.

The hot shooting returned for the Knights in the third when they converted on 44.4% of their 3-pointers. Wartburg also picked up the tempo on the defensive side when it forced six turnovers and held the Eagles to just 35.7% from the floor in the period. Senior Ally Conrad led all scorers in the frame with five points on 2-of-4 shooting and the Orange & Black went into the final period with a 10-point lead.

The Knights' swarming defense continued to shine in the final frame when they forced seven takeaways and held Edgewood to just two made field goals. Wartburg won the fourth 19-9 and cruised to its third straight victory.

Three freshmen led the way for the Knights in scoring with Alleman, Iowa native Murphy posting a game-high 15 points followed by Faber with a career-high 14 points and guard Britney Young with 10. Murphy and senior Payton Draper each tallied a team-high six rebounds. Wartburg finished the contest 40.3% from the field, 36.1% from 3-point land and 85.7% from the charity stripe.
