DUBUQUE, Iowa - Wartburg men's tennis rallied during the singles competition to defeat Loras College 5-4 in the American Rivers Conference quarterfinals at the Tucker Tennis Courts in Dubuque, Iowa on Tuesday, May 4. Junior
Lucas Huffman captured his 36th victory and is now the new record holder for most career wins at the No. 1 singles position.
The Knights (10-12, 4-4 A-R-C) will move on to the A-R-C semifinals where they will meet the No. 1 seed Luther College (12-4, 8-0 A-R-C) on Friday, May 7 at 4 p.m. in Decorah, Iowa.
The Orange & Black got off to a good start when they came away victorious at the No. 1 doubles spot but then went on to drop the final two doubles matches. The duo of Huffman and freshman
Jackson Eells recorded their team-high 16th doubles win.
Facing a 2-1 deficit, the Knights needed to take four of the six singles matches and that is just what they did. Huffman tied the contest with a straight-set victory at the No. 1 position and made history with his 36th career win. Wartburg then jumped ahead when freshman
Cade Davis earned his 15th victory and remained undefeated at the two spot.
A straight-set win from Eells at the No. 3 spot moved the Knights one win away from taking the quarterfinal matchup. After falling in the five and six matches, all eyes were on freshman
Nile Petersen at the No. 4 position. The freshman was up for the task as he won the tie breaking set to hand Wartburg the win.
