Men's Tennis On the Road This Weekend to Begin Spring Season

WAVERLY, Iowa – Wartburg men's tennis is set to open the 2022 spring season with an action-packed weekend.

The Knights travel to Cedar Rapids, Iowa on Saturday, Feb. 5 for matches against Coe College and the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse set for 9 a.m. and 12 p.m. respectively. The following day Wartburg travels to Ripon, Wis. for a match against Ripon College at 9 a.m. and then a match against Lawrence University at 1 p.m.

Wartburg competed in three matches during the fall season and finished with a team record of 1-2. The Orange & Black's lone win came against Hamline University in September. The team also competed at the American Rivers Conference Individual tournament, ITA Regionals, and the Midwest Open during the fall. As a team, the Knights finished with a 9-9 record in singles play and doubles play through the fall.

The Knights are led by Lucas Huffman, Jackson Eells, and Cade Davis who were all named to All-Conference teams a season ago. Huffman enters the spring season at number one all-time in Wartburg history for wins in the no. 1 position with 37 and counting.

Saturday's match will mark the 41st all-time matchup between Coe and Wartburg and the 15th meeting between UW-La Crosse and Wartburg. The Knights have struggled historically against these schools, with a record of 5-35 against Coe and 0-14 against UW-La Crosse.

On Sunday, Wartburg faces fewer familiar teams in Ripon and Lawrence. The Knights have only faced Ripon two times prior to Sunday and the series is split 1-1. Sunday afternoon will mark the second meeting ever between Lawrence University and Wartburg. Lawrence won the first meeting back in the 2002-03 season.
