Men's Tennis is in Action Three Times This Week

WAVERLY, Iowa – Men's tennis hosts its first home competition of the spring on Wednesday, Mar. 23 and then heads to Indianola, Iowa on Saturday for an American Rivers Conference matchup with Simpson and a non-conference dual with Northwestern College (Iowa).

Last Time Out
The Knights pushed their winning streak to five after sweeping play in Lakeville, Minn. against the University of Northwestern (Minn.) and Ripon College on Saturday, Mar. 19.
 
The teams of Lucas Huffman/Jackson Eells and Nile Petersen/Jeff Miller both went 2-0 in doubles play on the day to help lead the Orange & Black.
 
Wartburg had three athletes finish 2-0 in singles play in Eells, Petersen, and Kyle Sehlin. Huffman finished 1-1 at the number one singles position and Miller was 1-0 in his only singles action today.
 
The Knights' dominant 9-0 sweep over Ripon was their third shutout of the season.
 
Season Leaders
Huffman is now 12-3 overall in number one singles and is 9-5 in number one doubles heading into this week's competition. His partner Eells is 10-5 in number one doubles and is 9-5 overall in singles play, including 4-0 in the number two position.
 
Sehlin is 10-3 overall in singles play and is undefeated in both the fourth and fifth position with a combined 3-0 record. His record in the sixth position is 7-3, which is the second most wins on the team at a position.
 
Record Watch
The Knights are closing in on the program record for team wins in a season held by the 2019-19 team who had 16. This year's team is one win from tying and two from breaking the record.
 
Head coach Chris Gustas is two wins from tying the school record for most career men's wins by a coach held by Don Canfield with 68 wins over 10 seasons.
 
Huffman is currently four wins from breaking the Wartburg record for career singles wins held by Tom Koenen's 55 wins.
 
Series History
Wednesday's matchup with Cornell College will be the 46th meeting dating back to 1976. The Rams lead the all-time series 24-21 and have won six of the last ten matchups. The Knights have won the most recent dual with a 7-2 win last season.
 
The first matchup between Simpson and Wartburg came during the 1956-57 season and the Knights have dominated the series with a 57-14 lead. The Orange & Black have won 20 straight against the Storm.
 
The Red Raiders of Northwestern College are a less familiar opponent as Saturday will mark the sixth meeting all-time. The Knights lead the series 4-1 and lost last year's matchup in a close 4-5 battle.
