WAVERLY, Iowa-- Jeff Hill '90 and Jeff Voss '89, two Wartburg wrestling alumni, were named finalists for the 2021-22 National High School Coach of the Year, the National High School Athletic Coaches Association (NHSACA) announced in February. The banquet took place in June.
All nominees must be active head coaches for the category they are nominated in for the current NHSACA National COTY Award Program (2021-22).
The duo were also roommates during their time at Wartburg. The pair was a part of head coach Dick Walker's 1985 recruiting class that saw the first individual National Champion for Wartburg (Dean Gavin, 1989).
Hill was a four-year starter for the Knights and won 60 matches. He is in his 32
nd season as the head wrestling coach at Petersburg PORTA, in Petersburg, Ill, and is the winningest high school wrestling coach in the state of Illinois with 752 career dual wins through the 2022 season. Hill was inducted into the Illinois Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association Hall of Fame in 2011.
Voss was a four-year member of the wrestling program, won 61 matches, and was an All-American in 1989 (167 lbs, 6
th place). He is in his 26
th season as the head wrestling coach at West Delaware High School in Manchester, Iowa. Voss was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2015 and was a 2015 Bob Siddens Iowa High School Coaching Excellence Award recipient.
