No. 24 Wartburg falls to No. 1/1 Christopher Newport in Sweet Sixteen

MEDFORD, Mass.-- The No. 24 Wartburg women's basketball team fell 60-51 to No. 1/1 Christopher Newport Friday in the NCAA Tournament Sweet Sixteen. The Knights close the 2022-23 season with an overall record of 23-7.

Game Summary
  • First Quarter
    • Christopher Newport scored the first five points before a Jaedon Murphy layup got the Knights on the board
    • CNU stretched the lead to 10-2 with just over five minutes left in the first
    • Lauren Woeste made a free throw and Maggie Wilkins scored a layup, but Wartburg trailed 14-5
    • Macy Harris scored and then Wilkins converted on another layup to make the score 21-9 after one quarter
  • Second Quarter
    • Sondra Fan scored to start the second for the Captains and Sara Faber answered with a basket of her own
    • Wartburg didn't score again for three minutes when Britney Young connected on her first triple of the game to make the score 31-14 with 4:09 left in the half
    • Wilkins made a three and then Olivia Baxter scored with 1:47 left in the half to make the score 33-19 CNU
    • Young closed the quarter with another three and the Knights trailed 36-22 at the break
  • Third Quarter
    • Scores from Harris and Faber cut the lead to 12 points early in the third
    • The Knights got within 10 after Young's third three of the game with 5:48 left in the third
    • Murphy connected on a four-point play that made the score 35-44, but the Captains scored the last four of the quarter to make the score 48-35 after three
  • Fourth Quarter
    • Murphy opened the fourth with a three pointer to cut the lead to 10 and then Faber cut the lead back down to 10 after a CNU answer
    • Christopher Newport was able to keep a 10+ point lead throughout the fourth quarter, despite a layup from Woeste and another three from Maggie Wilkins
    • The Captains held on to win 60-51
