WAVERLY, Iowa – Wartburg men's golf is set to start their spring season at the Cougar Spring Preview March 23-24 at Weaver Ridge Golf Club in Peoria, IL.
Last Season
The Knights finished the 2022-23 season fourth at the American Rivers Conference Championships with a team score of 951 over the three-day event.
Wartburg returns four of the starting five from last year's Conference Championship, including the top finisher for the Knights a year ago in Taylor Thompson who finished tied for 13th. Wartburg had a 312.0 scoring average from a season ago.
Season Outlook
The Knights return all but two players from last year's roster and four of the starting five from last year's Conference Championship. With a more experienced group Wartburg looks to build off their previous results from their fall season.
"Last year we weren't overly experienced from a conference standpoint," said head coach Jason Steege on bringing back multiple conference starters. "We have a solid nucleus of guys, and we feel like we are more ready to compete within the conference," he said.
In the fall, Wartburg had three top-5 finishes as a team including a dual meet win over Coe to start the season. Coach Steege gives his thoughts on the fall season and how it was different than years prior.
"Our fall season was a little unique," said Steege. "It was a good opportunity for us to play some younger guys and get them some experience in the tournaments that we played in. I was excited about the progress those guys have made and what they did this fall," he said.
With the season being split between the fall and spring seasons, Coach Steege talks about how the team can build off their success from the fall and carry it over to the spring season.
"Working the guys who weren't with us in the fall back into the mix and finding who has made the biggest improvements throughout the season and who positions themselves to take the next step and perform in the conference tournament," said Steege.
