Russell Malterud named head Clay Target Sports coach

WAVERLY, Iowa—Russell Malterud has been named the next head clay target sports coach at Wartburg College, John Cochrane, the Lowell J. Walker Athletics Directorship Endowed Chair announced today.

"We are so pleased to welcome Russell to our staff and to the leadership position of our Clay Target Sports program," said Cochrane. "He brings excellent technical knowledge of the sport and a leadership skill set that will enable him to continue to develop and build on the foundation that Coach Hambly did such an excellent job of establishing. Russell shares our vision of competing for National Championships in a culture that emphasizes the individual development of the young people in our program. We look forward to his direction and his contributions to our athletic department family."

Malterud comes to Wartburg from the City of Omaha where he has served as the recreation coordinator at Harry A. Koch Trap and Skeet club for the past year. He manages a club that throws 1.5 million targets each year.

"I would like to thank John Cochrane and Wartburg College for the opportunity to be the next head coach for the Clay Target Sports Team," said Malterud. "I am looking forward to helping our student-athletes grow and achieve their goals academically and athletically."

Prior to Omaha, he served as the graduate assistant coach for the shotgun team at William Penn University for two seasons. The Statesmen won the 2023 NCSSAA Division IV (NAIA) National Championship. Malterud spent the 2021-22 academic year as the GA for Concordia-Nebraska.

He earned his bachelor's degree from Concordia University, Nebraska in 2021 and his master's degree in organizational leadership from William Penn in 2024.

Malterud was an NCSSA All-American (sporting clays) in 2024, Honorable Mention All-American (high overall and trap) in 2023 and an ACUI First-team All-American (high overall) in 2024 at William Penn.

He replaces Wyatt Hambly who departed in April.

The Sunrise, Minn. native will begin his duties at Wartburg on June 9    .
