Knights top Coe 52-46 in a defensive battle

WAVERLY, Iowa – Women's basketball outlasted Coe College 52-46 in a American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) defensive battle inside Levick Arena on Saturday, Jan. 24. The Wartburg defense has now held opponents under 50 points in eight-straight games.
 
The Knights are now 12-6 overall and 8-1 in A-R-C play, while Coe moves to 14-4 overall and 8-1 in A-R-C play.
 
Game Summary
  • First Half
    • First Quarter
      • Katie Boulagner got the scoring started in today's contest with a three pointer assisted by Corrie Harrison after two minutes of play
      • Coe scored the next four points to take a 4-3 lead before Lauren Golinghorst and Grace Hennessy combined for three points at the free throw line to retake the lead 6-4 halfway through the quarter
      • Carly Rich knocked down a three pointer in the final minutes of the quarter to keep Wartburg in front 9-8 after one quarter
    • Second Quarter
      • Wartburg opened the second quarter on a 5-0 run in the first three minutes after scores from Boulanger, Hennessy and Laynee Hogan
      • Following a Coe three pointer, Harrison made a layup and both Regan Pagnianio and Katelyn Aden scored from the free throw line to make the score 18-11 with 4:06 left in the half
      • Coe outscored Wartburg 10-5 in the final minutes despite scores from Boulanger, Golinghorst and Hogan
        • The Knights took a 23-21 lead into halftime
  • Second Half
    • Third Quarter
      • The Knights continued their high-effort team defense in the third quarter with pressure on the Kohawks offense that continued to lead to uncharacteristic turnovers
      • Four minutes into the second half the score was tied 25-25 after strong starts from both defenses
      • Wartburg outscored Coe 7-0 over the next two minutes after a three from Golinghorst and two points each from Aden and Boulanger
      • Hogan scored in the final minutes of the third to keep Wartburg in front 34-28 after three quarters
    • Fourth Quarter
      • Two free throws Harrison and a three pointer from Boulanger put Wartburg in front 39-28 one minute into the fourth quarter
      • Coe was able to cut the Wartburg lead to 43-35 with 6:24 left to play despite scores from Boulanger and Aden for Wartburg
      • The Kohawks made it a four-point game with just over three minutes left to play before Hennessy nailed a three pointer for the Knights to make the score 46-39
      • Coe answered with a three pointer, but the Knights closed the game at the free throw line with made free throws from Golinghorst, Pagniano and Hennessy
        • Wartburg held off Coe 52-46 in a defensive battle
