ELDRIDGE, Iowa — Wartburg College (1-0, 0-0 American Rivers) defeated Saint Ambrose 6-1 on Tuesday. Wartburg swept the three doubles matches and won five of six singles matches. The Knights start their season 1-0.
The Knights earned the doubles point by sweeping the three completed doubles matches.
Thomas Trujillo and
Ezequiel Viteri defeated Samy Khiyara and Miguel Sampaio 6-3 at No. 1 doubles,
Shuya Machida and
Landon Murch topped Shingai Manyonga and Emilio Palencia 6-4 at No. 2, and
Cole Palese and
Milan Lecic beat Jaxson Eisenbarth and Riley Kraft 6-1 at No. 3.
The Knights carried the 1-0 lead into singles and won five of the six courts. Trujillo defeated Khiyara 6-2, 3-6, 10-8 at No. 1 singles, and Viteri added a 6-3, 6-3 win over Manyonga at No. 2. The Fighting Bees picked up its singles point at No. 3, where Sampaio defeated Machida 7-5, 3-5, 13-11.
The Knights also got straight-set wins from Palese,
John Gustafson and Lecic. Palese defeated Palencia 6-0, 7-5 at No. 4 singles, Gustafson beat Eisenbarth 6-0, 6-4 at No. 5 and Lecic topped Kraft 6-1, 6-3 at No. 6, giving the Knights a 6-1 dual victory.
