Marcus Newsom, the six-time United States Track Coaches Association Division III indoor women's Coach of the Year, three-time USTFCCCA Division III outdoor women's COTY, and 2021 USTFCCCA men's outdoor COTY, has led Wartburg track to 306 indoor and 359 outdoor Division III All-American performances since 1999. Thirty-nine individual events have earned national championship honors since he took over the program.
Newsom began his tenure in 1998-99 after serving as an assistant from 1995 to 1998. He's received 16 USTFCCCA Division III Central Region women's outdoor and indoor Coach of the Year honors to his resume along with the national awards. In 2021 he received the central region men's outdoor COTY.Â

In 2009, his women's teams became only the seventh in NCAA Division III history to sweep indoor and outdoor national titles in the same season and joined the cross country program in earning the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association's prestigious Deb Vercauteren Program of the Year award. The 2012 women's team swept the National Championships and set new all-time meet records in team points in both venues.
A native of Kansas City, Kan, Newsom attended Butler Community College in Eldorado, Kan., where he was a national qualifier in track and field and played on the football team. After three semesters at Butler, Newsom transferred to Bethany College of Lindsborg, Kan. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree. in sociology with a minor in criminal law in 1992. While at Bethany, he was a letterwinner in both football and track, earning all-conference honors in both sports.
Newsom's coaching career includes a year as the strength and conditioning coordinator and assistant football coach at Bethany and a year as assistant football and track coach at Mid-American Nazarene of Olathe, Kan. Newsom came to Wartburg in 1995 as an assistant football and track coach and director of minority recruitment.
Newsom completed his master's degree at the University of Northern Iowa. In addition to his coaching duties, he is an assistant athletic director and the department's diversity issues coordinator. He and wife, Stephanie, are the parents of Mosai, Asa and Che'.
