WAVERLY – A pair of goals in the first and second halves, as part of a 32-2 shots advantage, lifted Wartburg to a 4-1 win over Central Oct. 13.
The victory, moving coach Sara Johnson’s team to 8-4-1 overall and 4-1 in the Iowa Conference, saw four different players register goals. Junior midfielder Katy Wendt (Bettendorf), scoring three points, sent in her team-best 11th in the 35th minute as the eventual game winner. Two underclasswomen got involved, too. Freshman midfielder Kelli Anderson (Cary, Ill.), scored her first collegiate goal in the 27th minute, and sophomore forward Kaylee Benning (Waverly) tallied her fourth goal in the 52nd minute. Junior midfielder Taylor Vermie (Cedar Rapids) added the final score in the 78th minute.
Central’s two attempts were both on goal. The first was saved on a dive at the right post from sophomore goalkeeper Monica Noti (Carol Stream, Ill.), while the second, coming from the foot of sophomore forward/midfielder Sierra Kuhn, found the back of the Knights’ net in the second half.
Wartburg takes to the road Saturday, Oct. 16, for a 1 p.m. match at Dominican University in River Forest, Ill.
Notes: Wendt goes into the weekend having scored a point in four consecutive matches. … Benning’s done the same in three of her last four outings.
