Knights split Simpson tourney matches

INDIANOLA – A solid .261 team attack percentage buoyed Wartburg College’s efforts at the two-day Simpson Storm Invitational Oct. 15-16.

Coach Jennifer Walker’s team finished 2-2. The Knights (16-14) had a big Friday, upending Illinois Wesleyan in four and sweeping Gustavus Adolphus. Saturday saw the Orange and Black take a set from seventh-ranked UW-Whitewater in a defeat and then end with a three-set loss to No. 15-ranked St. Olaf, the tournament champion.

Individually, four players wound up at or above .245 in attack percentage. Sophomore outside hitter Britlyn Sieck (Fayette), going over the 300-kill mark for the second time, had 44 kills and a .272 percentage, while junior outside hitter Kamille Van Natta (Readlyn) ended with 29 and a .245 percentage to go along with four ace serves and 29 digs. The freshman tandem of middle hitter Kelly Niemann (Fredericksburg) and outside hitter Ramey Sieck (Fayette) continued to impress. Niemann garnered 20 kills, a .319 attack percentage, three solos blocks and nine block assists, and Sieck added 16 kills, a .378 attack percentage, 71 assists, three service aces and 23 digs. Sophomore middle hitter Monique Davisson (Cedar Rapids) also had strong defensive numbers with three solo blocks and 10 block assists.

Wartburg returns to Levick Arena in the Wartburg-Waverly Sports and Wellness Center for a Homecoming Week 2010 clash with the University of Dubuque Wednesday, Oct. 20. Match time is 7:30 p.m.

Notes – Britlyn Sieck’s weekend numbers also moved her over 800 career kills. She has 807 going into next week. She’s been in double figure in kills in six of her last eight matches. … Her sister, Ramey, is just 31 assists shy of 500.
