Wartburg opens week with road win

STORM LAKE - Wartburg College scored a pair of goals in the opening 5:43 and was off to the races in a 9-0 Iowa Conference win over Buena Vista Oct. 20.

The Knights, winners of five of their last six, had junior forward Chelsea Frye (Waverly) tally the opening and eventual game-winning goal at 3:40. Freshman midfielder Rachel Torry (Urbandale) came back with the next two goals at 5:43 and 18:26, and it was all Orange and Black from there.

Wartburg (10-4-1 overall, 5-1 IIAC) held a 28-3 shots advantage on the Beavers (7-9, 1-6 IIAC). Junior midfielder Katy Wendt (Bettendorf)and senior defender Kelsey Kovacevich (Johnston) also chipped in multiple-point matches with a goal and assist apiece.

The Knights close their home regular season schedule Saturday, Oct. 23, when the University of Dubuque visits the campus field for a 1 p.m. match. The members of the Class of 2010-11 will be honored prior to the start.

Notes – Sophomore Monica Noti (Carol Stream, Ill.), and junior Haley Hergert (Amana) combined on the shutout in net. They each contributed a save to the squad’s second blanking of the year. … Noti takes a scoreless streak of 194 minutes and 41 seconds into the Dubuque match. … Wendt goes into the weekend having scored a goal in three straight matches.
