WAVERLY – Powered by a .311 attack percentage, Wartburg College won its fourth match in six outings with a 25-18, 25-13, 25-17 victory over the University of Dubuque Oct. 20.
The Knights, improving to 17-14 overall and 4-2 in the league, started fast compiling a .389 attack percentage in the first set. Coach Jennifer Walker’s team came back at .300 in the second set and .243 in the third set. Dubuque slipped to 7-22 overall and 0-7 in the conference.
Individually, the evening belonged to freshman middle hitter Kelly Niemann (Fredericksburg) and sophomore outside hitter Britlyn Sieck (Fayette). Niemann hammered 10 kills at the Spartan defense and ended with a sparkling .556 attack percentage. Sieck added 10 kills and hit .292.
Other strong numbers for Wartburg belonged to freshman setter Abby Breitbach (Jesup) (21 assists), Niemann (two service aces), freshman libero Marissa Shinstine (Tripoli) (16 digs) and junior middle hitter Kamille Van Natta (Readlyn) (14 digs), and Sieck and sophomore middle hitter Monique Davisson (Cedar Rapids) (two block assists).
Wartburg breaks from competition until their close their regular season home schedule with Luther College of Decorah’s visit to Levick Arena Tuesday, Oct. 26. Match time is 7:30 p.m.
Notes – Niemann’s performance continued a recent hot streak for the freshman. She’s had an attack percentage of .280 or higher in seven of her last 10 matches. … Sieck’s recorded a .250 or higher attack percentage in seven of her last nine appearances. … Freshman outside hitter Ramey Sieck (Fayette) joins the theme with a .300 or higher attack percentage in five of her past six matches.
