Knights topple Luther

Boxscore

WAVERLY – Wartburg College bounced back from an opening set loss to upend Luther in four sets Oct. 26. The win cinched up a spot in the 2010 Iowa Conference tournament.

Playing in front a crowd of better than 1,300 at Levick Arena, the Knights (18-14 overall, 5-2 IIAC) used a .429 attack percentage in the second set as a fulcrum to the match victory. The home side added to the second-set 25-11 victory with a 25-23 decision in the third set and a decisive 25-17 final in the fourth set.

Four individuals had attack percentages of .250 or higher. At the head of the class was freshman outside hitter Ramey Sieck (Fayette). She had 10 kills and one error in 14 attempts for a sparkling .643 night. Sophomore middle hitter Monique Davisson (Cedar Rapids) was next at .444 (four kills and no errors in nine attempts), while sophomore outside hitter Britlyn Sieck (Fayette)(12 kills and three errors in 36 attempts - .250), and freshman middle hitter Kelly Niemann (Fredericksburg) (eight kills and three errors in 19 attempts - .265) followed.

The offense was joined by a tough defensive effort against a scrappy Norse offense. Wartburg had 12 team blocks with Davisson turning in five block assists, and Niemann and freshman outside hitter Maddie Forsyth (Charles City) adding four each.

Wartburg continues its schedule with two matches at the UW-La Crosse Halloween Classic Saturday, Oct. 30. The Knights face the host Eagles at 10 a.m. and Wisconsin Lutheran at 12:30 p.m. inside Mitchell Hall on UW-La Crosse’s campus.

She is currently on a run of seven consecutive matches at better than .200. … Davisson and Niemann usually get block assists in bunches.
