KENOSHA, WIS. – Wartburg College gave defending NCAA Division III national champion and No. 3-ranked Washington University of St. Louis, Mo., a stern test in a four-set loss Nov. 13.
Coach Jennifer Walker’s team, seeing its season end at 24-16 in the 2010 NCAA Division III national tourney Carthage section, narrowly missed a first set win, falling 25-23 and took the second set 25-22 from the top-seeded Bears. WashU came back for 25-19 and 25-14 wins to end the match.
Junior middle hitter Kamille Van Natta (Readlyn) led the charge. She turned in 12 kills, a .250 attack percentage and 16 digs. Freshman right side hitter/setter Ramey Sieck (Fayette) and freshman outside hitter Maddie Forsyth (Charles City) added nine kills each. Freshman middle hitter Kelly Niemann (Fredericksburg), continuing a sparkling freshman slate, kept WashU’s offensive attack on its toes with six blocks (one solo and five block assists).
