DUBUQUE – A hard-nosed effort from Wartburg College fell just short in the championship round of the 2010 Iowa Conference tournament.
The second-seeded Knights, despite dropping to 14-5-1 with a 1-0 loss, held a 9-6 shots advantage over top-seeded and top-five ranked Loras. Coach Sara Johnson’s squad had three players with multiple shot attempts. Junior forward Chelsea Frye (Waverly) had three, while junior midfielder Katy Wendt (Bettendorf)and sophomore midfielder Kaylee Benning (Waverly) added two each. Loras goalkeeper Katie Chambers foiled shot on goal tries from Frye late in the second half and Wendt in the opening frame.
The host Duhawks broke up the scoreless tie in the 41st minute. Kelly Murphy went down the right side and slipped a shot past a diving stop attempt by sophomore goalkeeper Monica Noti (Carol Stream, Ill.)
Notes: Through the IIAC tourney, Wendt is the squad offensive leader with 15 goals, nine assists and 39 points. Frye and Benning are second and third in goals (six/five) and tied for second with 14 points each.
