PELLA – Wartburg College battled back from a tough-shooting first half Dec. 4 but wound up falling to Central 76-64 in Iowa Conference play.
Coach Dick Peth’s Knights (3-4 overall, 0-2 IIAC) had the host Dutch tied at 8-8 midway through the opening frame. However, a 13-2 run by the home side gave them a lead they wouldn’t relinquish. Central built the lead to as much as 21, but a resilient Wartburg group whittled away at the deficit throughout the final 20 minutes and pulled as close as seven points. A 12-of-12 effort by the Dutch at the foul line over the last 1:47 sealed the decision.
The junior tandem of forwards Cole Danielson (Marshalltown) and Jordan Sathoff (Packwood) led the Orange and Black. Sathoff, after a scoreless first frame, finished with 15 points, thanks in large part to four three-pointers, while Danielson ended with 14. He also canned four three-balls. Other strong numbers for Wartburg came from freshman forward Eddie Diemer (Cedar Falls) (five blocked shots and three assists), freshman guard Jordan Hester (Chicago, Ill.), (three assists), and junior forward Kirk Sidey (Greenfield) (eight rebounds).
The Knights continue conference play with an 8 p.m. start inside Buena Vista University’s Siebens Fieldhouse Wednesday, Dec. 8.
Notes – Sathoff reeled off his 10th straight double-figure scoring game. … Danielson has been in double figures in each of the squad’s seven games this season. … Diemer’s five blocks marked the fourth time this year he’s been in multiple numbers.
