WAVERLY – The front line trio of junior middle hitter Kamille Van Natta of Readlyn, freshman outside/middle hitter Kelly Niemann of Fredericksburg and junior middle hitter Sofie Swift of Colfax helped lead the way for Wartburg College at its home invitational Sept. 10 and 11.
Van Natta, earning all-tournament honors, closed the two-day event with 36 kills, a .289 attack percentage, 10 blocks and 35 digs. Niemann was just as tough on opposing defenses with 24 kills, a .353 attack percentage and four service aces. Swift topped the group with a sparkling .441 attack percentage to go with 17 kills, three solo blocks and seven block assists.
Head coach Jennifer Walker’s team swept past Buena Vista University of Storm Lake and Maryville University of St. Louis, Mo., an NCAA Division II program, Friday evening. The Knights, closing the weekend with a 6-4 overall record, battled team standings’ champion Nebraska Wesleyan University of Lincoln, Neb., in a three-set loss falling only 25-23 and 25-20 in the first and third sets and gave St. Mary’s University of Winona, Minn., a four-set challenge dropping set one 25-22, gaining a win in the third set by a 25-23 count and falling 25-21 in the fourth set.
The Knights return to Iowa Conference play for a home date against Cornell College of Mount Vernon Tuesday, Sept. 14. First serve inside Levick Arena of the Wartburg-Waverly Sports and Wellness Center on Parents’ Night is 7:30 p.m.
