Wartburg falls in IIAC home opener

WAVERLY – A double-figure kill night from sophomore outside hitter Britlyn Sieck (Fayette) and a strong .263 attack percentage from freshman outside hitter Maddie Forsyth (Charles City) highlighted a four-set loss for Wartburg College Sept. 14.

Cornell, improving to 9-1 overall and 2-0 in Iowa Conference action, picked up a 25-16, 18-25, 25-16, 25-21 win over the Knights. Head coach Jennifer Walker’s squad, dropping its third straight inside Levick Arena, went to 6-5 and 1-1.

The Knights steadied themselves in set two for the win with a .219 attack percentage. However, the remainder of the evening saw the struggles of set one (-.156) come back with a -.029 in the third set and a .088 in the final set. Sieck ended as the kills leader with 10, while Forsyth ended with nine and three service aces. Junior middle hitter Kamille Van Natta (Readlyn) turned in seven kills, 11 digs and four block assists.

Wartburg continues its slate at the two-day UW-Oshkosh tournament Friday and Saturday, Sept. 17 and 18. Walker’s team faces St. Norbert College of De Pere, Wis., at 5:30 p.m. and Wisconsin Lutheran College of Milwaukee, Wis., at 7:30 p.m. Friday. Saturday’s opponents are determined by the outcome of the Friday’s contests.
