Knights fall in weekend opener

Boxscore

WAVERLY – Wartburg College held a 23-18 shots advantage but couldn’t dent the net of Macalester College of St. Paul, Minn., in a 2-0 non-conference loss Sept. 18.

The Knights, dropping to 3-2, took aim at visiting keeper Tressa Versteeg at several stages over the 90-minute match. However, Versteeg kept the Fighting Scots’ goal clean with five saves. Junior Haley Hergert (Amana), in her first Knights’ start, was nearly equal to the task with eight saves.

Macalester got two into the back of Wartburg’s net from Lauryn Gutierrez in the second part of the first half. Junior midfielder Katy Wendt (Bettendorf)registered seven shot attempts for the home team.

Head coach Sarah Johnson’s squad begins a three-match road trip with a 2 p.m. start at Grinnell Sunday, Sept. 19.
