GRINNELL – Wartburg College used an 18-10 shots edge to its advantage Sept. 19.
Head coach Sara Johnson’s Knights, improving to 4-2, riddled the back of the Grinnell College net six times in a 6-0 win over the Pioneers. Junior midfielder Katy Wendt (Bettendorf) recorded her second hat trick in a week, on three shot attempts, and opened the scoring with goals in the 12th and 23rd minutes.
Junior forward Chelsea Frye (Waverly)added a goal as did sophomore midfielder Shaleigh Werkman (Marion) and junior midfielder Whitney Larish (Apple Valley, Minn.) Junior midfielder Taylor Vermie (Cedar Rapids) also turned in a multiple-point day with two assists.
The second defensive shutout of the season was shared by three goalkeepers. Junior Haley Hergert (Amana), in her second successive start, took the win with a perfect sheet and one save in the first half. Sophomore Monica Noti (Carol Stream, Ill.), earned three saves in just over 29 minutes, and freshman Miranda Fadden (Des Moines), appearing in her first Knights’ match, played the final 15:57.
Notes – Wartburg opens a busy week of action Tuesday, Sept. 21, traveling to St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn. … It will be the third match against a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opponent. … The Orange and Black also open their Iowa Conference season over the next seven days when they visit Cornell College in Mount Vernon Saturday, Sept. 25. … Johnson’s crew returns home for a key regional battle with Concordia College of Moorhead, Minn., Sunday, Sept. 26.
